Discussion: Book Recommendations?

A sister posted to the group:

I have a favor to ask everyone. There is a sister here who is interested in Islam and sent me the following email about wanting some books. If any of you know of any good books on these topics please let me know inshAllah. The interested sister writes:

"I'm still interested about the woman/male roles in Islam. I also want to know more about the nature of God. How Islam came to be the only one that considers Jesus a prophet not a son of God. And finally, the a better understanding of Muhammed. So basically, everything and anything. I'm also looking for a good book that helps one understand the Qur'an. It's difficult to read and understand what certain surahs are truly saying."

I am trying to get a nice list of books that fit the above topics and then go from there. some topics may not have books, however if you know of articles, lectures, chapters of books please let me know inshAllah.

Topics:

Gender Roles

Jesus
Understanding the Quran
Understanding the Prophet
Sincerity

May Allah reward you!

    Asalaamu Alaikum,

I actually have many of the same questions since I was raised Christian non-denominational and, although have been studying Islam for nearly a year, have not yet converted. In any case, I would recommened the following book:

Jamal Badawi's Gender Equity in Islam.

    Wa alaikum as salaam,

Some good books I've read and recommend for new Muslims or people interested in learning more about Islam are:

    Muhammad by Martin Lings

The Essential Qur'an by Thomas Cleary

Books I haven't read but are considered good for dawah:

The Vision of Islam by Murata, Sachiko, and Chittick, William C.
    Islam,

Religion of Life by Abdul Wadod Shalabi, edited by A.H. Murad

    Hope that helps!

    Wa alaikum assalam,

I picked up the book, "What Every Christian Should Know About Islam," by Ruqaiyyah Warris Maqsood for a
friend. I have not had a chance to read it, but the description states that the book discusses many topics
that Christians ask when coming to Islam. It covers:

    1) theological differences between Christianity and
    Islam
    2) religious beliefs of Islam
    3) religious duties of Islam
    4) answer to some of the questions most frequently asked by non-Muslims about Islam.

    It might be worth recommending.

Also re: the Prophet (SAW), I just bought the CD series, "The Life of Muhammad" by Imam Anwar Al-Awlaki
and it is fabulous. I am a convert and just now am really trying to learn about the life of Muhammad
(SAW). I am so inspired by these CDs and I highly recommend them. I know they are expensive, but absolutely worth the money.

    Insha'Allah this helps.

I recommend the "The Holy Quran" translated by Thomas Clearly (very easy to read) and the book "Muhammad" by Martin Ling sold at Rumi Bookstore in Fremont, CA. I hope this is beneficial to the sister.

For the gender issues I read a book called 'Gender Equity in Islam' by Jamal Badawi. That was a very concise and clear book. I came across it in a public library.

I'm not sure of any specific books for the other topics, I know that if you get like a general book on Islam, it should include the other topics and more. For Quran, she said she wants something that will help her understand the interpretation and correct understanding of the verses, so for that a tafseer of the Quran will be too overwhelming, but there are commentaries such as that of Abdullah Yusuf Ali that include some commentary at the bottom of the pages.

I would start with a basic book that introduces islam such as

http://www.al-rashad.com/Aqidah-Beliefs/What-Islam-Is/ or any other book you know of such as the one by Suzanne Hanif.

There are also articles online and a book on christianity such as
    http://www.al-rashad.com/Aqidah-Beliefs/What-is-Christianity/

    I hope that helps.
